Inktober 2016 Day 6 Boom Boom

Inktober 2016 Day 6 – Boom Boom

Because I’m old school, this is Boom Boom. Not Boomer.

“Boom.”  “Boom.”

This is based on Jim Lee’s drawing of her from his 1991 trading card series, where he drew a lot of mutant characters.  I showed a lot of these images on the Pipeline Comics Instagram account a few weeks back, then started a small project redrawing them in my style.  It’s been a lot of fun, and has forced me to draw certain angles or poses that I might not otherwise try.  That’s always a good thing.

I really enjoyed doing the pencil drawing on this one, but I’m afraid the final inked drawing is a bit of a colossal failure.  That pool table is ridiculous.  Let’s not even talk about however that net is supposed to be attached at the corner.  I cleaned the final image up from what you see at the end of the video, to correct for some errant lines that didn’t get erased.

If you watch the video, you’ll see me struggling with everything from filling in color to drawing backgrounds.  I can’t draw backgrounds.  I ended up deleting the one I had cobbled together. It was that awful.  But I didn’t cut any of that out of the video.  If you see any jumps, it’s because I edited out ‘dead air.’  I had a phone call or something else to deal with which took me away from the computer for a few minutes.  I probably spent 45 minutes inking and coloring this, but the final video ran closer to an hour and 15 minutes.  Even sped-up, you don’t want to see those dead spots.

The one good takeaway from this is in spotting blacks, something I’ve talked about on here recently.  The black areas on her leg and side are kinda random and a bit splotchy, but I think they add a lot to the image. They take a bit of the pure cartooniness away, but I like the way they add depth to the character and a bit of visual interest.  I need to work on those more.  I also want to do some watercolor-based coloring.  That’s a disaster waiting to happen, I know, but I’m curious if I can get one of those brushes to work.

It’s Not a Competition, But —

—these people will make you want to work harder.
