Eclipse and Glitterbomb first issue covers at Image Comics

Pipeline #1009: “Eclipse”, “Glitterbomb”, and Some Comics Podcasts

Glitterbomb #1 cover Image Comics Eclipse #1 cover Image Comics Top Cow

This week at ComicBook.com, I’m reviewing two new first issues from Image Comics.

Eclipse is a high concept book set in a near future world where the sun is deadly and humanity has moved underground, only to come up at night.  And then someone uses the sun as a weapon.

Glitterbomb is the story of a troubled actress in Hollywood who is possessed by a demon in her face.

Both are interesting, yet both have weaknesses they’ll have to overcome to get me coming back for the long term.  Still, I’m interested in what they have to offer.

In addition, I peruse a few of the comic book podcasts I’ve been listening to lately.  I’ve been listening to a lot of them lately, trying all sorts of shows.  I might need to post that list one of these days, too…

  1. Picked up Eclipse, based on your recommendation (you’ve never steered me wrong), and I think I liked it even better than you! The story pulled me right in, the concept is a fresh take on an overdone genre, and I find the characters instantly compelling (which seems to be rare in comics these days). I even like the coloring. I think the contrast of the golden hues with the deep shadow worked really well to convey the dominant power of the sun in this world. I also dig stuff like the “behind-the-scenes” pages at the end.

I flipped through Glitterbomb, but the “demon-inside” thing turned me completely off of it. I also hate stories that start at the end and then tell me how I got there. It’s an overused device that only works in very specific instances.

Thanks for the recommendations and keep them coming, Augie!

    1. First off, my apologies for the big delay in posting your comment, Ronnie. WordPress flagged it as span for reasons I’ll never understand, and I just caught that now, 5 months later.

Glad to hear you liked Eclipse, though! I have to admit to being an issue behind, but I’m still enjoying it.

I understand about Glitterbomb. The ever present demon in so many comics these days is throwing lots of people off. I thought Glitterbomb ended well with how it handled it, but I can understand as a personal preference not wanting to get into that.

And, yes, the “start at the end” thing is — ever-present. There has to be another way to start on action without going there. Chuck Dixon is the master of that….
