If you’re just starting, I’d recommend getting a (relatively) cheap tablet to draw on. Wacom’s base model is the Intuos\u00a0and can be had for under $100. If you go with the Intuos Comic<\/a> it even comes with a limited time (two years) version of Clip Studio Paint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If you want to go cheaper, Monoprice offers a couple off-brand options<\/a> for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I used a Wacom tablet for a decade before the stylus that went with it died. \u00a0Those stylii are impossible to replace now, which is why I moved to a Monoprice special<\/a> (which is the same as the Huion H610<\/a>, basically) \u00a0after that. \u00a0They all worked just fine for me, though the Wacom felt heavier and less flimsy. \u00a0Those Monoprice\/Huion stylii feel fragile in comparison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It will take some getting used to to draw on a tablet while looking at the computer screen. \u00a0Ultimately, if you get far enough, you might find that hindering your skills. \u00a0At that point, you should look into a digital pen display. \u00a0The Wacom Cintiq rules the roost in that market, though Amazon and Monoprice have far cheaper alternatives that are pretty good, too. \u00a0Check out Frenden’s reviews<\/a> of those. \u00a0I use a Yiynova 20″ display<\/a>, for example. \u00a0(Here’s a good review of the Yiynova 19″<\/a> that I found useful in making my decision.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n (May 2022 update:<\/strong> My Yiynova, sadly, took a beating for 7 years and then died. Or recent OS updates bricked it. I’m not sure which. I’m looking to replace it someday, probably with an XP-Pen display<\/a>.)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n I know it seems like a lot to spend, but if you are serious about drawing digitally (even is just as a hobby), it’s an investment that is well worth the money. \u00a0Unlike other hobbies, you won’t need to keep spending money to use it. \u00a0Buy once, use for years. Brilliant!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Eventually, if you go far enough, you’ll want a digital pen display like a Cintiq or a Yiynova. \u00a0But you don’t need to start there. \u00a0See if the tablet improves your art first. When that starts to become frustrating for you, then start saving your pennies for something more direct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What device are you using? \u00a0Do you have a fancy touch screen Cintiq?
