Pipeline #1007: Velvety Goodness

This week, over at ComicBook.com, I review “Velvet.” I noticed something in doing my research for this one.  (And by research, I mean “I read the series.”)

13 out of 15 covers feature Velvet posing with a gun.  One of the covers even has her posing with a gun twice.  There’s one issue’s cover that Velvet doesn’t appear on.  It’s a different spy character, also holding a gun.  The last cover is a closeup of a hand wielding a blade.

And I love all the covers.  Steve Epting’s photorealistic style doesn’t look forced and clumsy.  There’s a lot of inking work in there to create a believable and interesting look.  And Elizabeth Breitweiser’s colors are something worth studying, as much for her color selection as her technique of wielding various brushes to create interesting effects.  I mean, just look at what she does with colors on the cover to issue #12:

Love that stuff.

Anyway, it’s a great series.  Basically, it’s over now.  Assuming Amazon is right, there will be a hardcover collecting the entire series in February that I’m looking forward to now.  If you don’t want to wait, the whole thing is available digitally or in three trade paperbacks, the third of which is due out in September.
