New Releases for Mid-October 2018

The folks at Europe Comics released a fresh batch of English language translations last week.

Here’s a selection of titles that piqued my curiosity.

The Campbells v5

The Campbells v5 cover by Jose Luis Munuera and Sedyas

Sadly, this is the end of the series.

It’s a good conclusion for “The Campbells,” though, and makes me a fan for life of Jose-Luis Munuera.

Nelson v1

This is a comic strip that I’ve seen a lot in Spirou Magazine over the years. Now, they’re collecting a batch of those strips — four to a page — in English.

It’s not my normal kind of style, but I’m terribly curious about it.

Comic strips are a great way to learn a new language. The shorter word balloons are easier to translate, and it’s good practice typing them into Google Translate. You can’t copy and paste from a JPG, after all.

But, in the end, I’m glad someone else did the translation work for me so I can just read through it.

Sherman v5

This is the next-to-last book in the first cycle of the series.  The sixth part will be out next month.

It’s a Kennedy family-inspired story of a father who raises his son to become the President of the United States.  Now, the enemies that the father made along the way are coming back to get him, starting with the assassination of his son.

It’s filled with enough twists to keep me reading this soap opera.  It stumbles in a couple of places, including one obvious “romance” that everyone saw a mile away, but I generally enjoy the roller coaster of it all and the way they blend the multiple time frames of the story.

It starts to get very series in the most recent couple of volumes with the Nazi rise to power and how that affects Sherman’s business and wealth.

Mulo v1

Hey, more talking animals!

This one is about an orphaned mule who finds a clue to his past and ventures to an island off the coast of France to learn more.

Things get complicated, naturally.

How will it compare to “Blacksad” and “Jack Wolfgang“? Don’t do that. You’ll only hurt yourself thinking of it that way. Let the talking animal books stand on their own.  They make plenty of them in France.
