Always Never album cover detail by Jordi Lafebre

Pipeline and Sundry: Print, Podcast, Projects, and Streaming

This one’s a really random round-up of things. Here we go!

Hoping Asterix Isn’t Next

On the heels of a disappointing quarter for Netflix, Jeff Smith tweeted that the Bone project there is dead.

Crossing my fingers that the Asterix project survives. It’s early enough right now that they could theoretically pull the plug and write it off. They might want to hold onto it, though, because it would be such a strong performer in Europe.

For what it’s worth, a bad quarter for Netflix was inevitable. They’re still the biggest streamer by far, but the amount of competition springing up in the last couple of years would have to slow them down at some point. The cries that Netflix is dying are ridiculous.

Jordi Lafebre’s “Always Never”: The Print Edition

cover to Always Never by Jordi LaFebre, featuring the two main characters under an umbrella in the rain

I somehow missed this back in February, but Dark Horse picked up the rights to Jordi LaFabre’s excellent album, “Always Never,” and will have it in print in August in a hardcover edition.

Check out the latest Pipeline Comics podcast with this news to hear my wild speculation on what else that release might mean.

Either way, I’m excited just to get “Always Never” on my bookshelf, so count me in! You can pre-order through Amazon with my affiliate link. (You know the drill: I got a small percentage of your sale if you click through on that, which goes towards the care and feeding of this website.)

If you want to learn more about the art of comics-making from Jordi Lafebre, he has a class now called “Storytelling Illustration.” He goes over everything from inspiration and layouts all the way to finalized colors.

Visiting Word Balloon

I appeared on John Siuntres’ Word Balloon podcast in February. We spent an hour talking about the early days of podcasting, Pipeline’s 25th anniversary, and (of course) Franco-Belgian comics.

Not only can you listen to the podcast audio of this, but you can also watch me on the video, which is something I’m still not used to.

New Pipeline Linking Policy

I’ve talked ad nauseam in recent weeks about the Comixology/Amazon merger.

Going forward, the intention of this website is that I will be linking to Amazon and not Comixology. I have hundreds of reviews that have links to Comixology, but they’re mostly all broken now. They point to the Comixology front page on Amazon. That’s not useful.

I’m not going to go back and fix all of them (life is too short), but I will remove Comixology and add in Amazon as I come across those old reviews.

I started doing this in recent months when the change was coming, but the way the change has happened only proves my thesis that Comixology links are pointless now. Comixology isn’t a store; it’s an app.

Links to Izneo, thank heavens, are still good and should be preferred.

New Pipeline Project

It’s too early to talk about, but soon…

And don’t forget to check in on The McSpidey Chronicles. I’m working on issue #315 right now, which means we’re well past the halfway point.
