Marvel licenses out Miles Morales to Scholastic, in the latest Pipeline Comics podcast

Episode #57: Marvel’s Many Licenses

Marvel and Scholastic, sitting in a tree... But Scholastic owns the tree.

What is Marvel up to? They’re licensing out all their kids comics.

Marvel has licensed out any comics not meant for readers over the age of, say, 21 to IDW and Scholastic now. Is this just a good business move to cater to your core competency and let others spread your brand message? Does this tell us that Disney sees Marvel as solely a Direct Market company that it’s unwilling to expand to attack new markets with?

Has Marvel Comics officially given up on the kids and is letting Disney parse that out now?

  1. That’s exactly what I thought when Disney bought Marvel.
Wasn’t there a rumor at some point that they would licence their characters to DC and stop publishing altogether ?
