Pipeline and Sundry: Asterix, Scrooge, Yakari, Pirates, Auctions

CBR’s “Line It Is Drawn” did an “Asterix Meets…” survey of their readers and then had artists draw them up. Axel Medellin does a mean He-Man riff. Nick Perks nails the Obelix Meets Concrete panel. Groo and Captain Caveman meeting Asterix made me laugh.

The one that really made me laugh, though, was the suggestion for Asterix to meet Scrooge McDuck. Caanan Grall drew that one in what looks like the modern DuckTales style.

Longtime Pipeline Comics readers, of course, will remember this short story:

Asterix and Obelix meet Uncle Scrooge and their adoring public

It’s from “Asterix et Ses Amis,” which never got an English translation. But Vicar’s art was pitch perfect.

Asterix for Charity

Speaking of our favorite Gaul, Albert Uderzo’s widow auctioned off some of her late husband’s art to benefit Paris hospitals. The pages — from Asterix, Tanguy and Laverdure, and Oumpah-pah — raised nearly $450,000 dollars.

All of the Asterix pages came from different albums later in the series. None were from books written by Rene Goscinny.

At The Movies (They Still Make Those?!?)

I reviewed one volume of “Yakari,” a book about a young American Indian and his adventures. Cinebook is publishing series. It’s aimed at a much younger readership than me.

This summer, it’s going to be an animated movie packing the theaters in post-COVID France, I guess. That should only take about six people in 2020…

The movie is scheduled for release in August. There are no English language plans for it at this point. Or, at least, it hasn’t sold to an English-speaking market yet.

Oh, and since it’s a movie based on a comic, it’s described as telling Yakari’s origin story. What is that, that he was born?

More Pirates!

Mathieu Lauffray is drawing (and writing!) a new pirate series! It’s called “Raven” and the first book is out now in France. Click on the link to see a bunch of preview pages. It looks as beautiful as all of his work. I look forward to seeing it in English someday…

Here’s the trailer:

And don’t forget his beautiful Valerian book

Auction All The Things

I love reading a good auction book. They usually have very good, detailed reproductions of art I can’t afford. It’s the next best thing to owning something.

Here’s a BD-related art auction book from March 28, 2020. This one isn’t just original art. There’s a lot of first printings and various licensed things to classic comics. You can find posters, rare magazines, sketches, abstract Moebius paintings, and more. It’s worth a flip through.

  1. Yakari used to be a TV animated series way back when, it’s probably possible to find bits or maybe full episodes on youtube. If it was ever translated to english, I’m sure your kids would like it. It’s nice to see it stood the test of time and still working today. Back then it had a clear enlightened message about the environment and respecting each other that I guess was ahead of its time, perfect for today. As you said this is for a younger audience so I was always more into Derib’s more adult work. His series BUDDY LONGWAY is both beautiful and inspiring, if you can find some of that transleted you should check it out. If not, just look at the pictures, it’s still worth it, Derib is one of the unsung greats.

    1. Unfortunately Buddy Longway isn’t available in English. It’s such a beautiful series I really hope will be made available to English readers at some point

    2. I just looked and, yes, there are episodes of that Yakari series on YouTube. I might play one in the background while I work today. Thanks for the pointer. As I recall from… somewhere… Derib worked at Peyo’s studios near the beginning of his career, so of course he’s of interest to me. 😉

Oh, might as well look him up while I’m commenting. Here: Derib’s Lambiek profile has samples from “Buddy Longway.” It’s a big difference in art styles, but an impressive looking book. I’d love to see more of it, too.

  2. Oh this is amazing all the episodes on youtube are from a totally new show from 2019 that I did not know about.
I can’t find anything from the 1983 original that I remembered because of the awesome theme by the late Ariane Carletti
