IDW's Todd McFarlane's Spider-Man Artist's Edition cover

News: A McSpidey Artist’s Edition Is Coming!

Scott Dunbier dropped this little bomb on Twitter the other day:

If you read down the replies further and then consult the original press release (that I just discovered, four days later), you’ll learn these things about the book:

  • It’s scheduled for the end of September 2022.
  • It will be 192 pages and cost $150.
  • No, Todd will not be doing any sketches for the book, which is not terribly surprising.
  • It will contain original art from both “The Amazing Spider-Man” (100 pages) and adjectiveless “Spider-Man.” (60 pages)
  • 25 covers will also be included, including ones from “Marvel Age” and “Marvel Tales.”

If you have the Omnibus Edition, there’s likely nothing new here in terms of images. But that’s not what you buy an Artist’s Edition for. This is all about seeing the original art behind it.

For that same reason, I don’t care if we get any complete issues out of this. We’re at the state with Artist’s Editions that I’m just happy to see any themed editions of original art that I know had been sold off piecemeal across the last three or four decades.

McFarlane’s original art is scattered all over the place, but there are some whale collectors with lots of pages. Thankfully, Dunbier is knee deep in that world and can pull all these people together with his resources and his handy scanner to put this book together.

I’m sure a lot of the art you see on Comic Art Fans now will be included in this book. I’ve linked to some of those pages in The McSpidey Chronicles as we’ve gone along. This book will be a whole new resource that might have me going back to add new sections into various reviews. I can’t wait.

It would be a lot of fun to finish The McSpidey Chronicles with a review of this book.

On a completely unrelated note ( cough cough ), I do have a Patreon that exists to support the care and feeding of this website, and you can join there today to aid the cause!
